Photographing a California Dream on Fuji

Photographing Vaughn and Sam’s wedding at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo using the Fuji X-T30 and Fuji X-T5 was an unforgettable experience. Every wedding carries its own level of excitement, but this one felt especially meaningful because it brought me back to California through photography once again.

Interestingly enough, the only times I’ve been able to explore California so far have been because of photography. My previous trip brought me to Palm Springs as a second shooter for a wedding, and this time I returned as the main photographer in San Luis Obispo. There’s something incredibly special about that progression, and stepping into this role at such an iconic venue felt surreal.

I had always heard about California’s famous weather, and that weekend absolutely lived up to the hype. Warm sunlight, soft coastal air, and the kind of golden glow photographers dream about made the entire experience unforgettable.

And then there’s the Madonna Inn itself.

Photographing a Wedding at the Madonna Inn

Photographing a Madonna Inn wedding honestly feels like stepping into another world. In a time when so many wedding venues lean toward minimalism and muted tones, the Madonna Inn embraces color, personality, and bold design while still feeling incredibly elegant.

Vaughn and Sam chose a venue that perfectly reflected who they are. Fun, vibrant, and completely unapologetic in its uniqueness.

Every hallway, staircase, and hidden corner felt like a photo waiting to happen. As a wedding photographer, it’s rare to walk into a location where inspiration feels endless, but the Madonna Inn truly delivers that experience.

A Lightweight Fuji Wedding Photography Setup

For this wedding, I photographed using both the Fuji X-T30 and the Fuji X-T5 paired primarily with the Viltrox 25mm f1.7 AIR lens. All the photos in this blog were taken on the Fuji X-T5.

This combination has quietly become one of my favorite setups for wedding photography.

The Viltrox 25mm f1.7 AIR offers a natural perspective that feels intimate without distortion, which made it perfect for storytelling moments throughout the day. It’s also incredibly lightweight, which matters more than people realize when you’re photographing weddings for hours at a time.

Having both the Fuji X-T30 and Fuji X-T5 allowed me flexibility while maintaining consistent color science across the gallery. Fuji’s colors continue to impress me, especially when photographing skin tones in mixed lighting environments like the Madonna Inn’s vibrant interiors.

The files felt clean, sharp, and incredibly easy to work with straight out of camera.

The Spiral Staircase First Look Location

One of my favorite images from the day was photographed at the bottom of one of the Madonna Inn’s iconic spiral staircases.

Although this wasn’t their actual first look moment, it happened in the same space, which already carried so much emotion and anticipation just moments before.

The curves of the staircase framed Vaughn and Sam beautifully, almost pulling your eye directly toward them. It’s one of those architectural features that makes the Madonna Inn such a dream venue for wedding photography.

Iconic Pink Wallpaper Portraits

Of course, photographing around the Madonna Inn means embracing color.

The portraits in front of the famous pink wallpaper quickly became some of my favorites. The bold tones somehow managed to complement Vaughn and Sam perfectly without overpowering them.

It’s a reminder that great wedding photography isn’t always about neutral backdrops. Sometimes leaning fully into a location’s personality creates something far more memorable.

Light and Color in front of the Windows

Another standout moment came while photographing them in front of the Inn’s colorful windows.

The natural light filtering through added depth and texture without feeling harsh. California sunlight really showed off here, creating soft highlights while still maintaining vibrant color throughout the frame.

The Fuji X-T5 handled this beautifully, preserving detail while keeping tones natural.

The Secret Garden at the Madonna Inn

Stepping outside into the secret garden felt like discovering an entirely different venue hidden within the property.

We slowed things down here and captured two of my favorite portraits from the entire wedding. The greenery softened the energy of the day and gave Vaughn and Sam a chance to simply exist together for a moment away from everything else happening around them.

Moments like these are why I love wedding photography so much.

A walk past the Madonna Inn Sign

No Madonna Inn wedding feels complete without incorporating the iconic sign itself.

Photographing Vaughn and Sam walking together in front of it felt cinematic in the best way possible. There’s something about movement in wedding photography that instantly makes an image feel alive.

Instead of posing too heavily, I let them simply walk together and interact naturally, which always produces the most genuine moments.

Ending the Night Like a Film Still

The final image from this set might actually be my favorite.

Photographed as Vaughn and Sam walked through the Madonna Inn together, it feels almost like a still pulled from a movie. For this shot, I switched to the Fuji XF 18mm f2, which added a wider perspective and allowed the environment to play a larger role in the story.

There’s movement, emotion, and just enough imperfection to make it feel honest.

Sometimes those are the photos that stay with you the longest.

Why This Wedding Meant So Much

Getting to photograph weddings continues to take me to places I never imagined photography would lead me.

From Palm Springs as a second shooter to San Luis Obispo as the lead photographer, California has already given me incredible memories through this craft.

Vaughn and Sam trusted me to document one of the most important days of their lives at one of the most unique venues imaginable, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.

The Madonna Inn is truly unlike anywhere else, and for wedding photographers who love storytelling, color, and personality, it’s a dream location.
